Carboniferous Limestone outcrops over about half of the surface of Ireland and in all but one of the 32 counties.

It is not surprising to find that Ireland has a large number of karst areas and a considerable number of caves.
There are wide variations in limestone types across the country and this has had a profound effect on the types of cave found in the various regions.
